Meet The Team – Luke Smith
There are few men out there as brave as Luke Smith…Father to three boys, DIY extraordinaire husband of the owner of Premium Sales. Having spent many years within logistics operationally, Luke did the one thing few men dare to do…he went to work for the wife.
Tell us about your previous work experience?
I have been in the logistics industry since the age of 20 – firstly with Palletways’ warehousing division as an operative and worked my way through stock control, supervisor and business development manager. I then moved from the warehousing division to the Birmingham depot to set up their Palletways Solutions service offering. From here I took a role at Palletforce working with network members as Regional Operations Manager for 4 years.
Why did you decide to join Becky’s business?
Premium Sales was becoming too much for Becky to handle alone, especially after giving birth to our 3rd son! We didn’t want to bring in someone external as a Manager at the time and so decided I would become involved to help with the day to day running of the business, and also attend some of the client meetings. Premium Sales was growing rapidly and I was keen to be a part of the success!
What is it like working for Becky?
Strict! She runs a tight ship at home and work is no different.
What is your role within Premium sales?
Currently I am Sales Director – so largely responsible for driving new business, and also looking after our existing customers… and a bit of tea making too!
Your styles are very different, how does that benefit the business?
As we always say to our customers – you need a varied approach. My way will appeal to some people, but Beck’s will appeal to others. By working together, we provide the ‘capture all’ offering that we shout about to our clients.
If you could give anyone advise about going to work for their wife, what would it be??
You need your head testing! Just kidding … I would always say to ensure that the role and responsibilities are clearly defined before starting. Also, it’s great to have ‘no work talk’ rules at certain times of the day/week so it doesn’t take over every meal time and holiday!
