It’s half-time: How are you scoring against your 2023 goals?
Don’t panic but…the end of Q2 is here! Half the year has flown by already, so now is the perfect time for a mid-year check-in for your business. Are you hitting your goals? Is your business on target for the year? Are your 2023 plans starting to bear fruit?
The end of Q2 is half-time. A moment to re-evaluate the goals you made at the start of the year and answer these questions. When you first set your goals at the beginning of the year, the excitement and determination behind them is a great push in your motivation to achieving them. However, this early momentum can fade quickly. Taking a look at your progress now can help refocus your goals, boost morale and clearly show you what’s working and what you need to change.
Here are three things to remember when re-evaluating your goals this July:
1. Review your progress. As simple as it sounds, you cannot tell if you are moving forward, backwards or not at all unless you sit down and look over your progress. Revisit the goals you set at the start of the year (or the goals you set last month, last week, there isn’t a rule book!) By going over your goals with fresh eyes you can see how far off or how close you are to achieving them. Look at the failures and successes you’ve had over the last 6 months. If you have already hit some of your goals, AMAZING! Give yourself a pat on the back. Then, it’s time to start setting your next goal. However, if you are still on your way to or falling short of your goals, this leads onto our next point.
2. Adjust your goals. Once you have measured your progress to see where your business is currently sitting, it is time to think about changes that will help you achieve your goals. This might include, simply, a morale push for your team as their workload has begun to increase. It could be a tweaking and updating of goals to take into account changing market conditions. Or it could be a complete change to your original goals – if you’re losing the match 10-0, it’s time for a completely different game plan!
If a complete change is needed, don’t stress, this is normal! There are many factors which you can’t control that might affect your successes and failures, including staff changes, customer changes, wider economic conditions etc. So don’t dwell on what went wrong in the first half, use it as the springboard to a fresh start. But use your learnings when planning for the next 6 months.
3. Take a breath. Use this half-time point to your advantage. Make sure you give enough time to check in with your goals, your team and your general business set up. It can be all too easy to push on being busy, busy, busy, without really understanding if you are heading in the right direction. And remember, goal-setting and reviewing is not a one-time exercise. It needs to be done regularly to truly benefit from it. Not only does goal setting force you to plan ahead, it also gives you a way to track your progress and results. It really is the difference between winning and losing.
